![]() ![]() The resulting trail damage now poses safety hazards to hikers who often lose their route along the trail and end up in dangerous situations in the steep, loose terrain. The eastern slope is comprised of scree (a general term for a loose rock field) and over time, water flow from melting snow and yearly visitor use has eroded and shifted the trail. Stop by a park Visitor Center before you hike to determine if you need an ice ax or crampons to hike over the divide. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of layers. Paintbrush Divide is the highest point along the Teton Crest Trail at 10,700 feet in elevation. Notes: Paintbrush Divide is often covered in snow until mid-summer. Many parts of the trail were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps dating back to 1934 but, due to its remote location, much of the trail has remained largely untouched by park maintenance crews since original construction took place. At the mouth of Cascade Canyon, take a moment to gaze out from Inspiration Point and visit Hidden Falls. From the divide, descend to Lake Solitude and down Cascade Canyon. The trail ascends to the stunning Holly Lake, a great resting point, and then continues over the steep Paintbrush Divide. Did paintbrush divide so totaled about 36 miles (no snow as of 7/27). Follow the trail around the lake and then head up Paintbrush Canyon (look for trail sign). The loop trail begins at String Lake Trailhead. I've been researching and there have been pretty mixed reviews about snow and best time to go to the park. Trail Overview: This strenuous loop hike can be completed as a long day hike or an overnight by camping in Paintbrush or Cascade Canyon backcountry camping areas. I'm interested in doing the Cascade Canyon to Paintbrush Divide loop but know that Divide can have snow far into the Summer, wildflower season is around July, and the park starts to get cold in early September.
